Review -Academy Award Nominations -Best Movies of 2012

Every year I find myself in the unfortunate position of not having seen all the great movies and performances presented at the Academy Awards. Being a big movie buff, I always kick myself because of all the buzz you hear on television and on the internet about the greatest movies and acting performances of the year.

As we all know, Avatar was the huge movie of the year. As a matter of fact, I believe it grossed about $691 million dollars in the United States and Canada. Everybody I know who has seen says it was awesome. For some reason, I don’t have much of a desire to see it. Is it good just because of the special effects and the revolutionary special effects? Or is there something deeper and interesting beyond the special effects. I am just reluctant to go see it, but since it is so big, I feel compelled to go to the theater and see. I am told I have to see it in a theater. Needless, to say, I have yet to see it and the Academy Awards are just around the corner. But I digress…sigh…

The Academy has tweaked things a bit this year by nominating ten films for best picture opposed to the traditional five. The nominated films are as follows:

(1) “Avatar” - James Cameron and John Landau -producers
(2) “The Blind Side” - Gil Netter, Andrew A. Kosove, and Broderick Johnson -producers
(3) “District Nine”- Peter Jackson and Carolynne Cunningham, -producers
(4) “An Education”- Finoly Dwyer and Amanda Posey -producers
(5) “The Hurt Locker”-Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal, Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro-producers
(6) “Inglourious Basterds”- Lawrence Bender -Producer
(7) “Precious: Based upon the novel “Push” by Sapphire-Lee Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness -producers
(8) “A Serious Man”-Joel and Ethan Cohen -producers
(9) “Up”-Jonas Rivera -producer
(10) “Up in the Air”-Daniel Dubiecki, Ivan Reitman and Jason Reitman -producers

Now out of these ten films, I have seen one in its entirety, at a movie theater- Inglourious Basterds. I love Quenten Tarantino and everything he makes it is a must see. I saw many parts of the blind side at a Christmas Day gathering. I couldn’t really focus on the movie too much since there was so many people there. There was a lot of banter and alcohol consumption. The movie seemed quite moving from what I saw. Sandra Bullock looked great, and I believe she was nominated for a leading actress role. Good for her. I always liked here. Anyways, I digress -again.

I would really like some feedback about which movies I should see before Sunday, March 7th. I have about two weeks to see all of these movies. I need advice. I heard “The Hurt Locker” was awesome. I also heard that “Precious” was quite moving. My brother told me that “District 9” was pretty cool.

Last year I rushed out to see “The Wrestler”, “Slumdog Millionaire”, “Grand Torino”, and “The Reader” the week before the Oscars. I was really compelled, and I am compelled again this year.

Therefore, some comments and feedback would be great. I usually watch movies at home since I have satellite/DirecTV.

This is Oscar time, and I am feeling the buzz and I want to be a part of it on Oscar night. Help!
